Posing at Brooklyn Glass with outsized component of sculpture of LA BOHEME: A Portrait of Today's Oceans in Peril, based on a tintinnid that I captured off the coast of Chile while onboard TARA OCEANS. It was love at first sight--the plankton looked like a tiny champagne glass for a mermaid.

SHELLSHOCKED PREMIERS

Mara Haseltine is on the guest panel for the premier of the documentary Shellshocked

Watch the preview for Shellshocked

SHELLSHOCKED: Saving Oysters to Save Ourselves follows efforts to prevent the extinction of wild oyster reefs, which keep our oceans healthy by filtering water and engineering ecosystems. Today, because of overfishing and pollution, wild oyster reefs have been declared 'the most severely impacted marine habitat on Earth' and no longer play a role in their ecosystems. Now scientists, government officials, artists and environmentalists are fighting to bring oysters back to the former oyster capital of the world - New York Harbor.

Mara Haseltine was an artist in Residence aboard Tara Oceans in Febuary and March 2011 and is currently working with the large network of scientists from Tara Ocean.

Tara Oceans is a 3 year long voyage traveling around the world which is chronicling the state of the oceans and its relationship to the planets atmosphere. Mara worked alongside scientists to capture plankton which she is now using microscopy to create 3 dimensional works which are an ode to the oceans and humankind's intrinsic connection to it.

Founded in New York City in 1904, The Explorers Club promotes the scientific exploration of land, sea, air, and space by supporting research and education in the physical, natural and biological sciences. The Club's members have been responsible for an illustrious series of famous firsts: First to the North Pole, first to the South Pole, first to the summit of Mount Everest, first to the deepest point in the ocean, first to the surface of the moon—all accomplished by our members.

Mara Haseltine Current Events: 2010

I am off soon to Antwerp Belgium. The piece is called ,"Hecate Future Moon " is a site specific ritualistic performance in which the I will initiate the growth of a crystal sculpture in the basement round chamber of an old theatre. The performance addresses the need to look into the past to see into a healthy future and examines the human shaping of the future of our planet. Antwerp is the perfect place to do this as it is the ancient cross roads of Europe and also is the hotbed of future thinking.

Haseltine will discuss how she has worked with a team marine biologists and ecologists to experiment and create the first solar powered oyster reef in New York City this past June as well as reef designs that combine science/technology and traditional methodology to create oyster reef habitat . When implemented on a large scale oyster reefs have the potential to filter the 27 billions tons of wastewater dumped into NYC annually and will bring back biodiversity to the region which has not been seen since before the Industrial Revolution.: http://www.solar1.org

Solo Show opens at the National Museum of Health and Medicine , Washington DC.http://nmhm.washingtondc.museum/

"Estrogen Tales: The Untold Story of Nine Molecules and How They Bonded...," is a collection of silk-screens and other works created by Haseltine and inspired by the research of medicinal chemist Dr. Hyun K. Kim on molecular improvements to contraception and women's health. The work is a celebration of Dr. Kim's discoveries which are prime examples of "science in plain site" which have incredible potential to improve women's health but have never been developed commercially, and stand with many other promising discoveries that could benefit the lives of women in particular, and on a broader scale the environment.
